About Reynolds Furniture: Family-Run Since 1867
Reynolds Furniture is the largest independent furniture store in Sussex, owned and run by the same family for six generations. Founded in 1867 by cabinet maker Samuel Reynolds, the business is still run today by his direct descendants, trading from the same stretch of Bognor Regis High Street the family has occupied since 1870. Our 26,000 sq ft store spans four impressive floors at 27–31 High Street, with over 60 upholstery groups, 30 dining displays, 30 beds and 15 bedroom displays, alongside occasional pieces and home accessories — we promise you’ll find something you love.
Our History
Samuel Reynolds opened his first small shop at 13 West Street in 1867, aged just 19. Bognor was growing fast — the railway had arrived in 1864 and the pier in 1865 — and a skilled cabinet maker was much in demand. That same year Samuel married Eliza Screeder in the Hanover Chapel on the High Street, directly opposite the site of today’s store. The early business turned its hand to almost anything: advertisements of the day describe “auctioneers, appraisers, house agents, cabinetmakers, upholsterers and undertakers”, and the family famously claimed to sell everything “from a hat pin to a house”.
As trade grew, Samuel moved to 27 High Street in 1870. In 1900 the family combined numbers 27 and 29 to create the largest shop in town, adding a new Edwardian frontage in 1905 and, in 1911, building the striking Depository on Canada Grove — modelled on the Harrods depository in Barnes — which still houses Reynolds Storage today. In 1929 came the company’s most prestigious commission: preparing Craigweil House for a convalescing King George V, and later conveying the King’s personal effects back to Windsor Castle.
The business weathered two world wars — during the Second World War staff carried out fire-watching duties, Bren guns were mounted on the store roof, and a showroom served as an emergency food store for the War Office. In 1953 the family purchased 31 High Street, once Bognor’s first Town Hall, and in 1998 two further floors were added, making Reynolds the largest furniture store in Sussex.
Norman Reynolds, the fourth generation, joined the firm in 1953 and served as Chairman from 1978, guiding the store through successive refurbishments and more than seventy years of change. He sadly passed away in 2024, and his knowledge of the business and of Bognor’s history is greatly missed.
